Part-Time GED Teacher - Mathematics
Employer: Jefferson County Literacy Council, 218 Wisconsin Drive, Jefferson, WI 53549; position
requires daily travel to Jefferson County Jail, 211 S. Center Street, Jefferson, WI 53549
Hours: Part- time afternoons; 3-6 hrs. per week
Instruction - Instruct incarcerated adults to prepare for GED testing; instruction may include reading,
English, math, civics and computer literacy. This position is primarily responsible for teaching
mathematics including algebra and geometry.
Design appropriate instructional strategies and materials for use with adult learners
Provide differentiated instruction as needed for learners at varying levels through the use of various
Administer pre and post-assessment measures using standardized instruments (TABE 11/12 and
Assess student learning, modifying approaches as needed for effectiveness
Use data to monitor outcomes and performance standards established by the Wisconsin Technical
College System for recipients of American Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA) grant funds
GED Testing - Work collaboratively with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Educational
Coordinator to prepare candidates for GED testing within the jail setting.
Complete required paperwork to establish GED corrections accounts for candidates
Schedule GED tests with the Administrator
Communication with learners - Communicate with learners in a positive, encouraging and respectful
Create and maintain a class environment appropriate for adult learners
Create and maintain a class environment that respects persons from diverse socio-economic and
Provide learners with information for needed services and refer to other community-based
organizations as needed
Reporting - Conduct intake of new learners as needed, submit related forms to JCLC office. Notify JCLC
office if additional materials are needed for class (books, markers, etc.).
Management - Maintain positive rapport with Jefferson County Jail Captain and staff. Leave classroom
in good condition since it is shared space with other programs.
Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education, secondary education, adult education, or a specific
discipline such as mathematics. Bilingual skills are helpful, but not required.

Must pass a criminal background check conducted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department
Salary commensurate with experience averaging $18 - 19 per hour.
